DEPARTMENT: Cardiovascular Surgery

 

SCHEDULE: On-call, 0 Hours per Week, Day, evening and weekend Shift.  Monday through Friday varies.

 

EDUCATION: Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Program, Licensed as Physician Assistant by

the Medical Board of California, and the Physician Assistant examining committee, NCCPA.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Licensed by State of California as a Physician Assistant

 

ACLS and BCLS certification required

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience as a cardiovascular physician assistant.

 

Possess and demonstrate a high degree of technical knowledge and aptitude of cardiovascular anatomy,

physiology and pathophysiology, including arrhythmia interpretation and hemodynamic monitoring in

the adult and geriatric populations. Excellent attendance and work record required.

 

Excellent verbal, written and non-verbal communication skills. Must possess knowledge of aseptic

technique, resuscitative equipment and cardiac drugs. Physical ability to meet the functional

environmental requirements of position. Demonstrated ability to provide a consistently high quality

of service to patients, visitors and staff at all times. Ability to function as a team member within

the department is essential. Must be flexible and willing to work with schedule and hours to

accommodate patient schedule, work ins and emergency cases. Must be able to work in a Labor

Management Partnership environment.

 

DUTIES: Performs admission evaluation on all new patients to include: obtains

basic medical information and history, reviews patients medical record, performs physical exam,

transcribes history and medical findings into patient medical record, and reports deviations from

normal findings to attending physician. Provides patient and family with pre-operative education.

 

Answers questions regarding surgery, recovery and risk factor modification; provides blood

transfusion information. Performs cardiovascular surgery peri-operative procedures; locates and

displays chest x-rays and pertinent patient information. Reviews patient chart noting allergies,

pertinent medical history, abnormal physical findings, catheterization and/or ECHO data and

specific cardiovascular disease. Assists in performing cardiovascular surgical procedures: assists

staff cardiovascular surgeons in opening chest and cannulating great vessels and

heart. Performs invasive procedures: insertion, removal, and monitoring IABP,

chest tube, arterial line placement, central line placement, insertion of pulmonary artery

catheters, thoracentesis, femoral cut-down, urethral catheterization, peripheral venous cannulation.

 

Administers intravenous medications for treatment of arrhythmias. Performs post-operative procedures

to include transcption of standard post-operative orders into patient medical records; assists

physicians with evaluation and management of intravascular volume, pharmacological

therapeutics, and nutritional status; reviews patient's cardiac, respiratory, renal, neurological

and gastrointestinal status during recovery; reviews vital signs, laboratory and x-ray studies;

assists with technical management of patients including introduction, maintenance and

removal of intravascular catheters and percutaneous thoracostomy tubes. Performs patient discharge

in conjunction with social worker, pharmacist, and physical therapist; dictates discharge and

transfer summaries in a timely manner. Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of

Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and

confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and

integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and

regulations, accreditation and licensure requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente's

policies and procedures.
