Job Description:

Obtains complete history of patient, recording past health and family history, review of health habits, environmental and occupational data. Initiates routine therapies within the guidelines of established protocols. Conducts physical examinations to provide data for use in diagnostic study and treatment or for use prior to initiation of specific therapies and for evaluation of related side effects. Performs necessary technical procedures such as aspiration and examination of bodily fluids, infections, drawing blood to determine type and cross-match, initiates blood transfusions, electrocardiograms, etc. Performs therapeutic duties which include but are not limited to: prescribing and ordering injections specified by established protocol or as directed by physician, suture placement/removal; application of splints, wound debridement, etc. Provides patient counseling on health maintenance, dietary restrictions, exercise programs and general supportive counseling. Maintains pertinent clerical records, protocol charts, reviews progress notes and prepares patient summaries. Orders and schedules tests, including laboratory, radiologic and special exams. Coordinates care with other health providers as appropriate. Prepares patient for and administers chemotherapy, if appropriate. Evaluates patient for related side effects and toxicities. Provides follow-up health maintenance care including appropriate adjustments of medication in accordance with established protocols or specific instructions from attending physician. May perform life saving procedures in the presence of life threatening situations such as cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage or similar problems when no physician is available. Supervises and establishes assignments for less senior Physicians Associates. Assists in research studies, gathers data, etc., if appropriate. Other related duties as assigned.
