Job Description:
The Surgeon's Assistant will assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. The Surgeon's Assistant will prepare the operating room and patient prior to surgery and may assist the surgeon during the procedures. The Surgeon's Assistant will perform support activities in the Unit as assigned.
1. Perform "scrub" assignment according to established guidelines:
2. Apply principles and practices of asepsis.
3. Distribute processed instrument sets, equipment and supplies in appropriate work and storage area.
4. Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedure.
5. Set up sterile instrument table and prepare supplies according to type of operation.
6. Assist in draping of patient and operative area according to need.
7. Assist and anticipate needs of surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to knowledge of procedural requirements and constant monitoring of progress.
8. Observe patient and be ready for emergencies.
9. Maintain correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse and report correctness of discrepancies according to established policy and procedure.
10. Maintain and monitor aseptic technique at all times and institute corrective measures in the event of contamination.
11. Assist in care, handling and disposition of specimen according to policy.
12. Assist in application of dressings, and in securing drainage systems.
13. Assist in moving patient to appropriate conveyor.
14. Discard soiled materials in appropriate receptacle, decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and reusable supplies and clean room as prescribed.
15. Assist the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions according to established guidelines.
16. Assemble and make available all necessary supplies according to requirements of the patient and surgical procedure.
17. Provide special equipment before, during, and after surgical procedure, as needed.
18. Observe and protect patient by correct positioning, application of restraint, strict aseptic practice and maintenance of aseptic environment.
19. Position patient, adjust table and accessories, as required for procedure.
20. Prepare operative area and assist in draping as directed.
21. Assist in maintenance of correct sponge, needle and instrument counts and report discrepancies to the surgical team and charge nurse.
22. Complete operative count, and related records accurately and legibly.
23. Observe personnel in the room constantly, control traffic, report and correct breaks in aseptic technique promptly.
24. Maintain and care for all specimens as directed to prevent loss or damage.
25. Assist in application of dressing, moving of patient and transfer to recovery room as directed.
26. Assist in room clean-up and make preparations for next procedure.
27. Mix medicated solution at the sterile field, only under the direct supervision of the Medical Director dispensing the medication.
28. Show medication label to person administering the medication.
29. Save all medication vials and/or ampules until patient leaves the room.
30. Announce in an audible voice the name, concentration, amount and route of administration of the medication.
31. Do not dispense narcotics or control drugs under any circumstances.
32. Assists in transportation of patients to and from the surgical suite as directed.
33. Participate in the care and storage of instruments/special equipment in the operating rooms.
34. Assist in the maintenance of quotas of current dates for sterile supplies and equipment in the operating rooms and storage areas.
35. Assist in keeping operating room and sterile storage areas and equipment in good order.
36. Assist in care of storage closets and cabinets.
37. Attend quality assurance meetings to monitor quality outcomes
38. Participate in ordering supplies and necessary equipment to maintain effective operations.
39. Track and monitor statistical data
40. Supports in the mission, vision, values of the Department.
41. Attends ongoing staff development as assigned to maintain appropriate knowledge and skills.
42. Is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and promotes an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity.
43. Adheres to dress code in accordance with departmental policy
44. Maintains attendance and punctuality record in accordance with departmental standards.
45. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
Performs other related duties
*-indicates duty is "essential" as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Job Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma preferred. Courses in science, biology and chemistry preferred.
1. Ability to read, write, understand and speak English in a clear and concise manner.
2. Visual and aural acuity to assess patients within parameters of job responsibilities.
3. Communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
4. Oriented to consumer satisfaction.
5. Prefer experience in ambulatory surgery operating room setting
Preferred certification in OR Technology or Registered Medical Assistant preferred.
1. Physical stamina and dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in area of assignment.
2. Exposure to a variety of clinical conditions, technologies and environmental settings.
