Job Description:
The Cardiac/Thoracic Surgical Physician's Assistant functions in a medical support role to the physician in the provision of medical care, and works under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician. Appointment of physicians assistants and the duties and responsibilities approved for each appointee are governed by the pertinent sections of the Public Health Law ; the Education Law; the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules, and Regulations of New York State; Hospital and Medical Staff Bylaws; and policies, rules, and regulations of the department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery.
The duties for the Physician's Assistant differ according to assigned areas, and are routinely assigned to work in either the Cardiac/Thoracic Operating room, the CSICU
CPU, 7 Center Cardiac Thoracic Step-down unit, or nights and weekend duty
A physician assistant who is capable of but not limited to taking care of patients on the cardiac step-down unit, Recognizing and addressing emergency situations, treating day to day medical issues, discharge planning / admission. Coordinating post op an pre op care. Able to take call on the floor.
Performs admission work-up, taking complete history and physical examination; orders admission tests and medications; work-up patient pre-operatively including patient education; execution of consent forms for surgical and diagnostic procedures consistent with current hospital policies; ordering tests and medications to optimize patient stability; acting as the Attending Surgeon's liaison with patients and families ; managing chronic ventilator- dependant patients, recommending weaning regimens, and removing tracheotomies when appropriate; assess post op permanent pacemaker and AICD patients, attending to appropriate studies that govern post-op aneurysm patients; being able to evaluate cardiothoracic surgical patients in the emergency room and on outlying floors when necessary during the daytime hours; provide assistance and support to the DAS sector when needed; opening and draining infected wounds; requesting consultation of physicians in common support specialties such as Infectious Disease; participating with the Heart-Lung Transplant Teams in care of transplant patients; dictates discharge summaries for each patient; participates in patient counseling with the nursing staff and social workers ; monitoring patient progress on a daily basis and checks vital signs, EKG's, x-rays, blood tests, and changes surgical dressings; removes surgical staples and sutures; temporary pacemaker wires, drains, monitoring and IV lines,; inserts and removes chest tubes, central lines , arterial lines, Foley catheters, etc; uses rapid atrial pacing to convert arrhythmias; fills out official forms mandated by hospital policy such as death certificates and state reporting documents; writes daily progress notes; participates in rehabilitation activities and discharge planning and assists the surgeon in maintaining accurate and current information about the daily progress of each patient
